In 1959, Elvis Presley's song, "My wish came true" spent 12 weeks on the US billboard charts. Fast forward to 2006, and that song has taken on a whole new meaning for Germiston resident Doreen Ekron.
Doreen, who lives in Primrose, is a self-confessed Elvis Presley addict, and most probably, South Africa's number one Elvis Presley fan. Her obsession with the King of Rock ‘n' Roll started when she was eight. Then, she believed that Elvis was in fact an actual king and was married to Queen Elizabeth! For Doreen, the legacy of ‘The King' has never diminished and today, she has a room in her house which is filled with Elvis paraphernalia.
A few months ago, her fascination with Elvis reached new heights when she won a trip, courtesy of 1Lifedirect, South Africa's first, fully direct life insurer and 94.7 Highveld Stereo, to Graceland.
To say that this was a dream come true would be an understatement! All my life I have wanted to visit the home of Elvis. I have recently returned from Memphis, having visited Atlanta, Nashville and the birth place of Elvis, Tupelo, Mississippi and I am still on cloud nine!
At Graceland, I bought myself a postcard and posted it to myself. The card read:
What an experience - I came, I saw, I cried. I had to send myself something to prove that this whole magical experience was real. It was, and I am very thankful."
Commenting on the lifelong dream competition, Lenerd Louw, CEO of 1Lifedirect says: At 1Lifedirect, we believe that life is for living. That is why we decided to run with this competition as it gives South Africans the opportunity to accomplish their ultimate ambition. We are extremely pleased that we were able to make Doreen's lifelong dream a reality."
